Shrinking a full amp-and-effects ecosystem into an actually pocket-sized stompbox isn’t something you often see, but IK Multimedia’s TONEX ONE Bass Edition ($199.99 retail) portents to do just that with an applause-worthy amount of ambition, tempered by sensible restraint. This quarter-size pedal delivers most of the company’s full modeling platform – from amps, cabs, and a handful of effects to a usable USB-C interface – in a chassis smaller than a typical soapbar pickup. On paper, it reads like a vaguely familiar do-it-all solution; in hand (and under foot), it aims to be a genuinely usable rig-in-a-box. But being fond of larger, flagship class modeling processors, I wanted to know whether something this diminutive could offer real value for players like me, who like to tapdance across many footswitches.
The TONEX ONE’s design is minimalist but clever: one large gain/volume knob and three micro pots whose controls change per preset and function, handling EQ, compression, gating, and other duties. Colored LED backlighting identifies active parameters, while translucent indicators show relative levels – helpful on paper, though small enough that visibility can be tricky at standing height and under stage lighting. The layout, however, is intuitive, and quick adjustments mid-set are easy once you understand the ALT and standard functions.
ALTernate Thinking
Pressing the ALT button accesses an alternate control layer governing the secondary functions of the same three pots – noise gate, compressor, and reverb by default. This keeps the interface tidy, but means you lose any visual cue of where a setting sits while in ALT mode. When you return to the main layer, you’ll need to readjust EQ if you’ve moved those controls. The knobs themselves have little to no detent feel, so fine-tuning by touch requires care.
Holding ALT for three seconds sends the pedal into Safe Mode, locking all controls to prevent accidental bumps. I found this to be a very cool feature, especially when it’s so easy to accidentally tweak the primary knob with your tow. A long press of the footswitch engages the tuner, using the three top LEDs’ hue and brightness to show sharp, flat, or in-tune states. The ALT LED also doubles as a tap-tempo or tempo indicator when applicable. Switching is silent and solid, and Dual (A/B) Mode proves especially handy for alternating between two tones within one preset. The always-on autosave behavior suits modern workflows, provided you expect that behavior.
What’s in the Box?
As one who’s partial to pedals, the TONEX software provides 262 total pedal models (not individual pedals, each, but variables of a smaller number of stompboxes), with 30 of those being aimed squarely at us bassists. Several bass-specific rigs proved instantly workable, from classic Gallien-Krueger flavors to more modern, articulate driven tones. Others needed a bit of EQ, which the interface makes straightforward.
Onboard storage is provided for 20 presets. For most bass players, that’s plenty to have on the pedal, and the computer editor allows for deeper rig rotations. Entering preset-browse mode (ALT + footswitch) turns the ALT LED purple and lets you reassign patches to the three active slots. IK’s VIR cabinet system remains one of the better-sounding IR implementations at this scale. The low end blooms nicely, and there’s a subtle sense of space, while coloring the source tone to varying extents. The global cab-bypass option is invaluable if you prefer an external IR loader or a real cabinet.
TONEX ONE and TONEX ONE Bass Edition support both Stomp (single/bypass) and Dual (two-preset) modes. The stereo/dual-mono output can be split with a Y-cable to feed separate monitor and FOH signals, headphones, and more. One limitation noted in the manual: the system can’t model time- or phase-based effects – reverbs, delays, modulation – or certain vintage fuzzes with internal parallel paths. Within its primary functionality, though, it covers a lot of ground.
The companion TONEX Editor software is where the pedal really opens up and options abound. It mirrors the hardware logic with color-coded controls and makes editing or managing ToneNET content far more efficient than scrolling through the pedal, itself. You can deep-edit amp, cab, and mic parameters, load IRs, and organize preset banks without friction.
Bundled TONEX SE and AmpliTube 5 SE expand the platform further, positioning the ONE as part of IK’s broader modeling ecosystem rather than a stand-alone toy. For quick changes, the pedal works fine on its own; for serious tone design, the software connection is essential.
As a 24-bit/44.1 kHz USB-C audio interface, the TONEX ONE functions reliably for direct recording, as well. Plug it into a DAW, with the ability to monitor the modeled tone in real time via headphones or connected monitors from the Out jack, and what you hear is what you put down. It’s not a replacement for a multi-I/O studio interface, but it’s a genuinely useful add-on for travel or compact rigs. I had no issues with latency, and stability was solid throughout my testing.
